A bus picks you up at 8:30 and drives you uphill to ALBERTÜSC where the winding path starts to the alp at the friable chalk and marble rock’s feet: SASSALBO – the white stone. The path leads up crossing slip rocks and protected Edelweiss fields to one of the minor peaks where a splendid view is offered way down to the valley populated with villages, high-tension lines, roads and train tracks along a meandering river and a turquoise blue lake. Raising your eyes you see the LAGO BIANCO in the north, a milky green reservoir lake, behind it the zigzag mountains of the Engadin. Going west you follow the mountaintops of SASSAL MASON, CARAL, CAMBRENA, PALÜ, you see its shrinking glacier, then VARUNA, CANTON, CURNASEL and rounding up the circle lies ALP GRÜM. In the south you see the LAGO DI POSCHIAVO and the valley joining the VALTELLINA (I) where TIRANO is. In the west you find the PIZ SCALINO with its glacier, at its feet the PASSO CANCIAN, where the mountain stream arises and where you cross over to Italy to the beautiful VALMALENCO with the massive snow covered MONTE DISGRAZIA. Looking east you see Sassalbo’s highest peak (2862 m), the steep boulders, the gentle looking scree, and the PASSO di MALGHERA that leads to the Italian refuge. Ravens fly by to spot some edible leftovers of yours. If you really feel fit enough for climbing you might make it to the summit cross and leave your name in the book there.
Of cause you could walk all the way to valley, but you might prefer the pleasant ride back on the bus.
The tour is guided and information on geology, fauna and flora will be provided. Please wear hiking boots and have warm, waterproof clothes with you if needed. Provisions are always valuable. Modification of the tour might occur if the path or weather condition would require it.
